Factory, the AI coding agent startup founded in 2023 by Matan Grinberg and Eno Reyes, just raised $200 million at a $5 billion valuation, according to Reuters via Investing.com. That's more than triple the $1.5 billion valuation it held just five months earlier, in April 2026. The round drew backing from Blackstone, Khosla Ventures, Sequoia Capital, Insight Partners, Evantic Capital, and Sound Ventures -- a list that reads like a who's-who of firms convinced this category is about to get very big. Factory isn't alone: Cognition, one of its direct competitors, recently raised $2 billion at a $48 billion valuation. Factory's product, called Droids, gives enterprise software engineering teams AI agents that go beyond writing code. Per the Reuters report, Droids handle code review, testing, security, documentation, and incident response -- the full lifecycle around a piece of software, not just the initial generation of it. Factory's CEO described the underlying vision plainly: 'Across the world's largest enterprises, we are seeing a move from individual coding agents to software factories that serve as the core foundation from which an entire software company operates.'
